Don't wash your face too frequently with a harsh soap in an attempt to control acne. This will strip sebum from your skin, making it extra dry. Also, sebum helps give skin its flexibility and pliability. Without this the skin can 'crack' and you can lose the skin's barrier function. This increases the risk of irritation and infection.

Do use a mild cleanser or oil/cream free soap to wash your face twice or thrice daily.

Don't use exfoliating scrubs if you have acne. Using harsh, abrasive products can contribute aggravate breakouts by irritating the skin making it harder for acne to heal and clear.

Do use mild soap gels or soaps instead. You can also cleanse your skin by applying some medicated/oil free cleansing lotion on your face and neck and wiping it off gently with moist cotton wool

Don't apply acne medications only on pimples.

Do apply a thin layer of medication over the entire pimple prone area. This will help kill bacteria, heal existing pimples and also help prevent new pimples

Don't squeeze pimples this can spread infection, making skin worse and result in scarring.

Do apply acne medication and keep your hands off your face.

Don't use acne medication inconsistently. Acne medication isn't as effective if you only apply it two or three times a week. Alternately, trying to compensate by over-applying acne medication can irritate and damage the skin, resulting in redness and over drying.

Do follow your doctor's advice on the frequency of application of acne medication and continue applying it for the period specified.
